OMBB, chemically known as Methyl 2-benzoylbenzoate (CAS No. 606-28-0), is a Type II photoinitiator widely used in UV-curable coatings, inks, adhesives, and varnishes. Its near-odorless characteristics make it particularly attractive for applications where low odor is an important formulation requirement.
OMBB works by absorbing UV light and generating reactive species that initiate the polymerization of unsaturated oligomers and monomers, such as acrylate-based resins. In many formulations, OMBB is used together with a tertiary amine synergist to improve photoinitiation efficiency and curing performance.

The recommended dosage depends on the resin system, film thickness, pigment concentration, UV lamp, and desired curing speed. As a general starting point, some commercial OMBB grades recommend approximately 2–5% by weight, followed by optimization through laboratory testing.
OMBB can be incorporated into a variety of UV-curing systems, including wood coatings, plastic coatings, metal coatings, printing inks, overprint varnishes, adhesives, and electronic materials. It is also used in UV ink and varnish systems for packaging applications.
For best results, formulators should consider OMBB compatibility with the resin and other photoinitiators, as well as light intensity, curing wavelength, coating thickness, and pigment loading. A combination of photoinitiators can sometimes provide more balanced surface and through-cure performance.
When selecting OMBB, consistent purity, low volatile content, reliable batch-to-batch quality, and appropriate technical documentation are important factors for industrial UV-curing applications.
